OpenAI has launched Prism, a free, cloud-based workspace designed to help scientists write and collaborate on research using artificial intelligence, as the company pushes deeper into tools for academic and scientific work.

Prism integrates GPT-5.2, OpenAI’s latest model for mathematical and scientific reasoning, directly into a LaTeX-based writing environment for scientific typesetting.

Prism is available to personal ChatGPT users, with business, enterprise, and education access planned later. Advanced features will be introduced through paid ChatGPT plans, OpenAI said.

“Science shapes nearly every part of daily life, but the pace of progress is still constrained by how research is done day to day,” OpenAI said in its announcement. “While AI has advanced rapidly, much of the everyday work of science still relies on tools that haven’t fundamentally changed in decades.”

The company said Prism intends to reduce fragmentation in research workflows, where scientists often switch between text editors, LaTeX compilers, PDFs, reference managers, and chat tools. Instead, Prism brings drafting, revision, citations, equations, collaboration, and AI assistance into a single workspace.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.2 operates within the document itself, allowing researchers to revise text, reason over equations, manage references, and explore ideas with full awareness of the paper’s structure and context. Users can also convert handwritten equations or diagrams into LaTeX and search for relevant literature, including from the research-sharing platform arXiv, without leaving the project.

Prism is built on Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform acquired by OpenAI and later developed into the current product. The company said this foundation enabled real-time collaboration, version control, and cloud-based access without requiring local LaTeX installations.

OpenAI said Prism supports unlimited projects and collaborators. “By reducing version conflicts and manual merging, Prism helps teams spend less time managing files and more time engaging with the substance of their work,” it said.

The company positioned Prism as part of a broader shift in how AI is used in research.
