Midjourney Plans Roll-Out of Full-Body Scanner with Midjourney Medical

Midjourney claims the resulting scans could offer MRI-like imaging at significantly higher speeds.

Midjourney, the AI startup known for its image generation platform, has announced a new healthcare initiative called Midjourney Medical, unveiling plans to develop a full-body scanning system that uses ultrasound waves to create detailed images of the human body in about 60 seconds.

The company said the system, called the Midjourney Scanner, will provide users with more frequent access to health data by combining large-scale imaging with AI-based analysis. Alongside the scanner, Midjourney plans to launch a spa business where the scans will be integrated into regular wellness visits.

“We’re building a bold new kind of machine to reimagine the foundations of healthcare and our relationships to our bodies,” the company said in its announcement.

According to Midjourney, the scanner works by lowering a person into a water-filled chamber through a ring containing approximately 500,000 ultrasonic transducers. These components act as both transmitters and receivers, sending sound waves through the body and collecting the resulting signals.

The company said the system generates terabytes of data every second, which are processed by a cluster of computers to reconstruct three-dimensional images of internal structures. Midjourney claims the resulting scans could offer MRI-like imaging at significantly higher speeds.

“The goal is for this process to take no more than 60 seconds. You go into the water, you come out of the water, and you’re done,” the company said.

Midjourney said it has already produced reconstructed scan images showing various parts of the body, including the abdomen and thighs, alongside AI-generated segmentations that identify anatomical structures.

The company plans to open its first Midjourney Spa in San Francisco in 2027. The facility will include hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges, and scanning rooms, allowing visitors to undergo scans as part of routine spa visits.

“It should be a place you love going, whether it’s by yourself, or with friends,” Midjourney said. “The scans are a side-effect. You barely think of them when going to the spa. But suddenly, you have a huge library of data about your health.”

Over the next year, Midjourney plans to refine its hardware and imaging algorithms, conduct research trials, and build its first research facility. The company said a second-generation scanner is already in development, with a third-generation system planned for 2028 featuring custom silicon.

The company expects regulatory approvals to be a key milestone. Initially, the scanners will provide body composition maps, while additional diagnostic capabilities will require approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

Midjourney aims to deploy more than 50,000 scanners globally by 2031, with a capacity of up to 1 billion scans per month.

“We think it’s completely possible that with enough early imaging in the future, the world could avoid 30% of all deaths and 50% of all healthcare costs,” the company said.

The announcement marks a significant expansion beyond Midjourney’s image-generation business. The company described itself as a “community-backed research lab” funded by users rather than investors and said it is exploring multiple long-term projects beyond healthcare.

Midjourney, founded in 2021 by David Holz, has built one of the most popular AI image-generation platforms without raising external funding. The company reportedly crossed $500 million in annual recurring revenue in 2025 while remaining fully self-funded.
