There’s a quiet platform war underway. One side focuses on flexibility, velocity, and modular builds. The other prioritises integration, security, and consolidation. Each approach reflects the specific pressures these organisations face.
Startups: Modular, Fast, and Experiment-Ready
Darwix AI, an India-based generative AI startup, recently raised $1.5 million to build an omni‑channel conversational stack for enterprise sales and support.
Startups are building on open-source tools, API-first services, and composable infrastructure. Their focus is quick iteration and minimal upfront investment. With limited runway and urgent delivery demands, they optimise for speed.
Perplexity AI, for instance, has gained attention with its AI-native search engine. The startup’s modular stack enables rapid updates and weekly feature releases. Tools like LangChain, Pinecone, Vercel, and Supabase are commonly used because they support fast feedback loops, multitenancy, and microservice integration without vendor lock-in.
Another standout example is StackOne, a UK-based startup that raised €17.6 million from GV and others in May 2024 to power next-gen AI agent integrations across enterprise software-as-a-service (SaaS) systems. Far from reinventing legacy infrastructure, they’ve created a flexible stack designed for deep, secure agent-to-enterprise connectivity.
Rather than building foundational models from scratch, most startups license application programming interfaces (APIs) from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, or Mistral. This approach allows them to fine-tune outputs without carrying the cost of model training or infrastructure management.
Investor interest confirms this trend. According to PitchBook, nearly 60% of generative AI (genAI) startup funding in the past year has flowed into companies building domain-specific AI tools. These startups focus on targeted business functions such as contract summarisation, code generation, instead of broad horizontal platforms.
Enterprises: Consolidated, Secure, and Integration-Driven
Enterprises follow a different playbook. Their priority is integration within existing data estates and process environments. Security, vendor relationships, and regulatory compliance top the list of concerns.
A Gartner survey noted that 73% of enterprise leaders prefer AI deployment via established platforms such as Microsoft Azure OpenAI, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or AWS Bedrock. These providers offer built-in governance, auditability, and integration pathways to common enterprise tools like Office 365, SAP, and Salesforce.
Coca-Cola signed a $1.1 billion multi-year deal with Microsoft. Both segments share the same north star: transforming their business through AI. But their routes diverge.
Startups prioritise modularity and velocity. Their focus is on testing hypotheses quickly and reaching product-market fit. This creates a preference for open tools, flexible pipelines, and interchangeable infrastructure.
Enterprises, on the other hand, seek control and scalability. Their goal is to apply AI to existing systems without disrupting compliance or operational continuity. This makes them lean towards hosted models, turnkey integrations, and platforms with Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Model choices reflect these priorities. Open-weight large language models (LLMs) like LLaMA, Mixtral, or Phi-3 are preferred by startups that value hackability. Enterprises opt for closed models with compliance guarantees, support agreements, and documented reliability benchmarks.
Who’s Building, Who’s Integrating
Startups are often assembling bottom-up. Their AI stack is a collection of building blocks, vector databases like Pinecone or Weaviate, orchestration libraries like LangChain or LlamaIndex, and lightweight frontend frameworks.
