AWS has unveiled Amazon Connect Health, an AI agent-powered platform designed to help healthcare organisations automate routine administrative work such as appointment scheduling, documentation, and patient verification.

The platform is HIPAA-eligible and integrates with electronic health record (EHR) systems. AWS said it is working with several partners, including EHR software providers, data integration firms, and patient engagement platforms, to support the service.

The launch marks the latest step in Amazon’s broader push into the healthcare sector, as the cloud giant looks to expand its presence in the roughly $5-trillion US healthcare market.

AWS has steadily built a portfolio of healthcare-focused tools in recent years. It introduced Amazon Comprehend Medical in 2018, a natural language processing service designed to extract insights from unstructured medical data. In 2021, it launched Amazon HealthLake, which provides infrastructure based on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards to organise health data. A year later, the company introduced AWS HealthOmics, a bioinformatics workflow service aimed at supporting genomics research.

However, Amazon Connect Health represents AWS’s first major product centred on AI agents—software systems capable of carrying out complex tasks on behalf of humans—within a regulatory-compliant healthcare environment.

According to the company, the platform integrates with existing clinician software and is designed to streamline administrative workflows for healthcare providers, including reviewing medical histories, managing clinical documentation, and handling medical coding.

At launch, Amazon said Connect Health supports patient verification and ambient documentation. Additional features, including appointment scheduling and patient insights, are currently in preview, while medical coding and other tools are expected to roll out later.

The service will cost $99 per user per month for up to 600 patient encounters, AWS said, noting that most primary care physicians typically handle up to 300 encounters a month.

Beyond its cloud operations, Amazon has made several significant investments in healthcare in recent years. The company acquired online pharmacy PillPack for about $1 billion in 2018 and bought primary care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion in 2022. Since then, Amazon has integrated elements of those businesses into its wider retail ecosystem, including same-day prescription delivery and virtual doctor consultations.

Efforts to reduce administrative workloads in healthcare using AI have become a major focus for startups as well. Companies such as Regard are developing AI tools to assist doctors with note-taking and analysing patient records, while others are using automation to streamline intake processes and scheduling.
