OpenAI has launched dynamic visual explanations, a new ChatGPT feature designed to make complex concepts easier to understand through interactive diagrams. Instead of relying solely on written explanations or static images, users can now explore mathematical and scientific relationships by adjusting variables and watching the results update instantly.
For instance, when learning about the Pythagorean theorem, users can change the lengths of a triangle’s sides and immediately see how the hypotenuse changes, OpenAI stated in a blog post. Numbers and variables can be adjusted directly, allowing learners to observe how formulas behave in real time.
To try the feature, users can ask ChatGPT questions such as “What is a lens equation?” or “How can I find the area of a circle?” ChatGPT will respond with both an explanation and an interactive module that users can manipulate.
At present, the visuals cover more than 70 maths and science topics. These include the binomial square, Charles’ law, the area of a circle, compound interest, Coulomb’s law, difference of squares, exponential decay, Hooke’s law, kinetic energy, linear equations, and Ohm’s law.
OpenAI says it plans to expand the range of interactive topics in the future. The feature is available to all logged-in ChatGPT users.
The launch is notable because it shifts ChatGPT’s role slightly, from simply delivering answers to encouraging users to engage with underlying concepts themselves.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape learning and is integrated into classrooms, it has also sparked concerns that students are becoming overly reliant on AI tools. According to OpenAI, more than 140 million people use ChatGPT each week for help with maths and science, subjects that have traditionally posed challenges for learners.
Other major AI companies are exploring similar approaches. In November, Google’s Gemini introduced its own interactive diagrams and visual learning tools.
The new feature also joins several other education-focused tools in ChatGPT, including Study Mode, which guides users through problems step by step, and QuizGPT, which allows users to create flashcards and test themselves on any subject ahead of exams.
