OpenAI on February 5 announced Frontier, a new enterprise platform to help organisations build, deploy, and manage AI agents that can perform real-world work across business functions.
It is available now to a limited set of customers, with broader availability planned over the coming months.
The company said Frontier addresses a growing gap between what advanced AI models are capable of and what enterprises are able to deploy in production. OpenAI said the main constraint is no longer model intelligence, but how agents are built, governed, and operated inside organisations.
“AI has let teams take on things they used to talk about but never execute,” OpenAI said, citing internal data showing that 75% of enterprise workers report AI helped them complete tasks they could not do previously.
OpenAI said it has observed these gains across more than one million businesses. Early adopters of Frontier include HP, Intuit, Oracle, State Farm, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Uber. Existing OpenAI customers such as BBVA, Cisco, and T-Mobile have already piloted Frontier to support complex AI deployments.
To support adoption, OpenAI said it pairs customers with Forward Deployed Engineers who work directly with enterprise teams to implement agents in production. The company said this feedback loop also informs future model development.
The ChatGPT maker said enterprises are currently struggling with fragmented systems spread across clouds, data platforms, and applications. As agents are deployed across organisations, each often operates in isolation, adding complexity rather than reducing it.
Frontier is designed as an end-to-end system that gives AI agents shared business context, access to tools, feedback mechanisms, and clearly defined identities and permissions. OpenAI said this approach mirrors how enterprises onboard and manage human employees.
“What’s slowing them down isn’t model intelligence, it’s how agents are built and run in their organisations,” the company said.
Frontier is built to work with existing enterprise systems and data without forcing replatforming. It uses open standards and allows organisations to integrate current data sources, applications, and agents, including those built in-house or sourced from third-party vendors.
According to OpenAI, Frontier enables agents to operate across interfaces such as ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI Atlas, and existing business applications, rather than being confined to a single user interface.
The platform provides a shared semantic layer that connects data warehouses, CRM systems, ticketing tools, and internal applications, giving AI agents a consistent view of how work flows through an organisation.
With this context, agents can plan and execute tasks such as working with files, running code, and using enterprise tools in a controlled execution environment. OpenAI said agents can build memory over time, using past interactions to improve performance.
Frontier also includes built-in evaluation and optimisation tools to allow teams to measure performance and improve outcomes as work changes. “This is how agents move from impressive demos to dependable teammates,” OpenAI said.
Security and governance are central to the platform, according to the company. Each AI agent has a defined identity, permissions, and guardrails, allowing deployment in regulated environments.
OpenAI highlighted several use cases, including root cause analysis in hardware testing, where AI agents reduced investigation time from about four hours per failure to a few minutes by analysing logs, documentation, workflows, and code.
Frontier is also positioned as an open ecosystem. OpenAI said it is working with a group of AI-native partners, including Abridge, Clay, Ambience, Decagon, Harvey, and Sierra, with plans to expand the program.
