OpenAI has launched the Codex desktop app for Windows, bringing its AI-powered coding assistant to one of the most widely used developer environments.

The tool is now available across ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. The tool works across the desktop app, CLI, IDE extension and cloud, allowing users to access it through a single account.

Codex helps developers build and ship software using AI agents that can assist with writing code, running tasks and automating repetitive work. With the Windows launch, developers can now access these capabilities through a native desktop application designed specifically for Windows.

According to OpenAI, the app is built for real developer workflows and includes native sandboxing to safely run AI agents within projects. This means developers can allow agents to edit files or execute tasks while keeping control over permissions and system access.

The tool allows developers to run multiple coding agents across different projects simultaneously. These agents can work simultaneously, meaning they continue running tasks in the background while developers focus on other work. The platform also allows users to review the agents’ output, guide their work and maintain context across tasks.

Another feature of Codex is ‘Skills’, which allows developers to connect agents to specific tools, scripts or workflows. These packaged instructions help automate complex tasks such as debugging, testing or deployment processes.

The Windows release comes shortly after OpenAI launched the Codex desktop app for macOS earlier this year. That version saw more than 1.6 million, and overall usage has expanded significantly as developers explore agent-based software development workflows.

Weekly active users have more than tripled this year to over 1.6 million, while overall usage has increased more than fivefold. Developers across organisations ranging from startups such as Ramp and Harvey to large companies including NVIDIA, Rakuten and Cisco are already using the tool.
