AWS, Google Cloud Announce Joint Multicloud Networking Solution

AWS and Google Cloud have introduced a jointly engineered multicloud networking solution that allows organisations to establish private, high-speed connectivity between the two platforms in minutes, moving away from the traditional, hardware-heavy setup that often took weeks or months.

The new model integrates AWS Interconnect – multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect and is supported by an open interoperability specification that other cloud providers can adopt. This gives customers automated, on-demand bandwidth provisioning and a managed, cloud-native experience instead of manual circuits, physical equipment and complex routing.

Explaining the shift, Robert Kennedy, VP of network services at AWS, said, “This collaboration represents a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity. By defining and publishing a standard that removes the complexity of any physical components for customers… connectivity is ready to activate in minutes with a simple point and click.”

The companies said the solution improves operational reliability by using quad-redundancy across interconnect facilities and routers, backed by continuous monitoring from both providers. MACsec is used for encryption between Google Cloud and AWS edge routers.

Salesforce is among the early adopters. Jim Ostrognai, SVP software engineering, said, “AWS Interconnect – multicloud allows us to establish critical bridges to Google Cloud with the same ease as deploying internal AWS resources… This native, streamlined experience accelerates our customers’ ability to ground their AI and analytics in trusted data.”

According to AWS and Google Cloud, the effort is aimed at reducing the “do-it-yourself” burden that enterprises have long faced when linking cloud environments. The open API specification is available for other providers to implement, extending the multicloud interoperability standard.

Rob Enns, VP/GM of cloud networking at Google Cloud, said, “We are excited about this collaboration, which enables our customers to move their data and applications between clouds with simplified global connectivity and enhanced operational effectiveness.”

Both companies said the initiative is a step toward a more open cloud ecosystem and encouraged customers to explore the offering through their respective product pages.
