Intel and Google have announced a multiyear collaboration to develop AI and cloud infrastructure, focusing on Intel Xeon processors and custom infrastructure processing units (IPUs).
The companies said Intel Xeon CPUs will continue to power Google Cloud systems across AI, inference, and general-purpose workloads. The partnership also includes expanded co-development of ASIC-based IPUs designed to handle networking, storage and security functions.
“AI is reshaping how infrastructure is built and scaled,” said Lip-Bu Tan, CEO of Intel, in a statement. “Scaling AI requires more than accelerators—it requires balanced systems. CPUs and IPUs are central to delivering the performance, efficiency and flexibility modern AI workloads demand.”
Google Cloud has already deployed Intel Xeon 6 processors in its C4 and N4 instances. These systems support workloads, including AI training coordination and inference.
“CPUs and infrastructure acceleration remain a cornerstone of AI systems—from training orchestration to inference and deployment,” said Amin Vahdat, SVP and Chief Technologist, AI Infrastructure at Google. “Intel has been a trusted partner for nearly two decades, and their Xeon roadmap gives us confidence that we can continue to meet the growing performance and efficiency demands of our workloads.”
The collaboration also focuses on IPUs, which offload infrastructure tasks from CPUs. The companies said this improves system utilisation and enables more predictable performance in data centres.
Intel and Google said the effort reflects a shift toward heterogeneous computing, in which CPUs and specialised accelerators operate together. The companies are working to improve efficiency and scale AI systems by combining general-purpose compute with infrastructure acceleration.
The announcement follows Intel’s entry into the Terafab semiconductor venture with Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. It will be a part of the $25 billion chip manufacturing project in Texas to produce large-scale compute capacity for AI and related systems.
